Maison Margiela REPLICA — By The Fireplace (Decants 2 / 5 / 8 / 10ml)
By The Fireplace is exactly what the name promises: burning wood, roasted chestnuts, a little clove, and a soft vanilla warmth that clings to a scarf the next day. It’s one of those scents people describe in food terms—toasted chestnut, smoke, “marshmallow” sweetness—but the structure is still perfumery: spice + woods + balsamic warmth, not a dessert.
What makes it work is the contrast. The opening has that pepper/clove snap, then the chestnut accord comes in and starts to feel “toasted.” After that, it settles into vanilla, Peru balsam, and cashmeran, which gives the whole thing a smooth, wool-like finish.
Olfactory pyramid (listed notes)
-
Top: Pink Pepper, Clove, Orange Flower
-
Heart: Chestnut Accord, Gaïac Wood, Cade Oil
-
Base: Vanilla Accord, Peru Balsam, Cashmeran
How it wears (real life)
-
First 15 minutes: spice + a quick lift from orange blossom, then smoke starts showing.
-
Mid: toasted chestnut / woody smoke becomes the main story.
-
Drydown: creamy vanilla-balsam woods, less “fire” and more “warm clothes.”
Performance is personal here: many find it solid and long-lasting, but some report it softening faster than expected—so I treat it as moderate to strong early, then closer later.
Uniqueness of smell: 8/10
Sillage: 7/10 (noticeable early, then settles closer)
Longevity: 7/10 (varies by skin; often better on fabric)
Available on Scenthub: decants only — choose 2ml, 5ml, 8ml, or 10ml.
